The new series on the Movistar Plus+ platform called ‘Celeste’ would be inspired by the legal situation experienced by the singer Shakira, accused of alleged tax fraud against the Spanish Treasury.
‘Celeste’ is directed by Elena Trapé and the Spanish screenwriter Diego San José, and although the story does not have the Barranquilla artist as its protagonist, it describes the series of problems that the singer had to face in the European country, including facing a trial in Barcelona who finally avoided being taken to jail.
The protagonist of this new series will be Celeste, a Mexican artist whom inspector Sara Santano, played by the renowned Spanish actress Carmen Machi, pursues to investigate her and prove that she lived 184 days in Spain, and therefore this would force her to pay taxes in that country.
Inspector Santano is about to retire, but the case of a very famous Latin singer comes to her office who faces a serious legal problem by not paying her taxes to the Spanish Treasury. 20 million euros depend on Santano’s work for the institution’s collection.
In this mission, Sara must leave her life and focus only on proving that the Mexican has remained in Spain all that time.
In March of this year, at the exit of the Malaga Film Festival, the protagonist of the series, which still does not have a release date, assured that Celeste is not Shakira’s story and that “I would like to be Shakira, I love Shakira I hope so. A kiss to Shakira from here. I am preparing a series that is about a Treasury inspector who has nothing to do with Shakira,” he said.
Although Machi acknowledged that the series ‘may have similarities to the Colombian case’ and she also said that she likes being referred to the singer.
Regarding this new series, comments on social networks have generated different controversies, there are those who claim that it is Shakira’s legal history but do not recognize it, others affirm that the Spanish Treasury would do it to clear her name.
